At Evanston Lumber, we recognize the need for sustainable design
or "green building". In keeping with this philosophy, we are proud
to tell you that we currently have numerous products that are
eco-friendly or "green" in-stock. Many of these products have been
sold at Evanston Lumber for years, while others are recent
additions to our ever-expanding list of green building supplies.
We are constantly looking to expand our green product offerings,
and welcome any suggestions on either "green" products that you
would like to see us stock, or products that you would like a
"greener" alternative for.

Preventing Drywall Cracks
About 75% of what homebuyers see as they walk through a new home
prior to closing is the wall finish. Drywall makes up a large part
of the home's interior, and flaws are visible immediately.
Customers, therefore, will tend to focus closely on the quality of
the interior finish. Problems such as edge cracks, nail pops,
visible seams, and sloppy or unfinished work contribute to
customer dissatisfaction. And many customers judge the
construction quality of the entire home by the quality of the
interior finish.
The
overall finished appearance of a wall or ceiling depends largely
on the quality of the framing, mechanicals, insulation, and
drywall hanging-the better these components of the home are, the
easier it is to have a near-perfect wall. Many drywall flaws are
actually caused during the framing stage; they usually result from
a lack of attention to detail during the framing stage. There are
many different ways that drywall can become flawed. Here are a few
examples:
Drywall problem #1: Corner bead pops
Possible causes: Corner studs moving independently

Managing Customer Expectations

When customers purchase new homes, they bring certain expectations
about what they want to the construction process. Customers paint
a picture in their heads of their new homes. If their real homes
don't match those visions, they may be disappointed. As a builder,
you have an opportunity at construction meetings to help make the
picture in the customer's head matches the home you're building.
If you do an effective job at construction meetings, you can help
customers to better understand the homes you're building for them,
and if they understand their new homes, they're likely to be
happier and more satisfied.

Your Questions Answered!
Q: My homeowner is very price sensitive, but wants a large
primed moulding for their home. Any suggestions on a moulding that
would fit their budget?
A: We suggest using MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard).
This product is very strong, provides longevity and is resistant
to warping that occurs over time caused by moisture. Homeowners
benefit from the cost savings compared to real wood because MDF is
man-made (from wood fibers), rather than particles. Compressed
with adhesive, its surface is smooth, so it's easy to apply
varnishes, laminates and paints directly to the surface. Plus,
it's easily cut, drilled and machined. Evanston Lumber now
stocks 14 MDF moulding profiles, which include casing, base
and crown.
