The Benefits of Using a Design Center

Outfitting a home with fixtures, color, and furnishings can be the most stressful part of new home ownership for both the homebuyer and the builder. Getting
the customer to make choices early in the process can reduce tension, but without a formal plan of attack, the design phase can drag on, and revisions can
lead to lost time on the jobsite and hair-pulling frustration for everyone involved.
While the budget usually determines the lot size, lot orientation, and floor plan, the interior look-and-feel is largely determined by the tastes and
preferences of the homebuyer. Particular aesthetic options and functioning details, such as plumbing and fixtures, may be considered standard by the builder, but they might not be what customers want in their home.

Stairway Safety on the Job Site

Headlines like "Painter Falls Down Stairwell: OSHA Violations Cited - Wrongful Death Suit Filed" are more common than many builders care to acknowledge.
According to OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), falls are one of the four leading causes of death in construction work today.  Stairways are an especially dangerous area of the job site, because many workers take safety for granted on and around them. A fall from only four feet is enough to cause a serious, debilitating injury, and a fall from over six feet can be fatal. Even though almost all accidents related to falls are preventable, each year thousands of workers are injured falling from stairs and landings, and from falling through stairwells.

Your Questions Answered!

Q: I'm doing a high-rise condo renovation, and I'm interested in purchasing a product that can prevent sound transmission through the wall and floors. Any suggestions?

A: We suggest using Homasote 440 SoundBarrier. This product is a special density, structural board made from 100% environmental cellulose fiber (a
composition manufactured to protect against termites, rot and fungi and resistance to moisture). It also insulates with twice the R-value of wood, and has an STC (Sound Transmission Class) rating of not less than 50. For some reference, an STC rating of 25 means that normal speech can be understood clearly, and at an STC rating of 50, loud speech is NOT audible. This product can be used in walls, partitions and floor/ceiling assemblies.

For more information on this product, please contact an Evanston Lumber Sales Representative (847) 864-7700.
